How reading is taught at Ynysboeth Community Primary School:
Nursery - Children receive lending library books each week to take home. They enjoy nursery rhymes and explore sounds using a variety of instruments, with a strong focus on communication and active listening. In the Summer term, children are introduced to initial letter sounds.
Reception - Recap the initial sounds during the first half-term of Reception. Children are grouped into reading groups after October half term from their first assessment. Parents are invited to a reading meeting to learn about how we teach reading.
All children learn to read through daily structured phonic sessions. We use the Read Write Inc rhymes in our phonics sessions and our expectation is for children to access Guided Reading by Year 3. Phonic assessments are completed every half term. Miss Holder is our literacy launch pad intervention teaching assistant, who provides extra reading/ literacy support across the school.
We will support your child on their reading journey to become independent, fluent readers. We believe that reading plays a powerful role in boosting self-esteem. When children become confident readers, they feel more successful and capable, which encourages greater participation in class and a more positive attitude toward school.
Year 3 - Year 6 - Reading is taught through guided group reading lessons. All children take part in guided group reading when they have passed the phonics assessment.
